Name: Mary Rattenbury
Position: Membership Coordinator, Friends of the Snite Museum
Email Address: mrattenb@nd.edu

What is the most rewarding aspect of your position?:
When I first started at the University, I so enjoyed meeting all the people that call Notre Dame home - from the students and alumni to the fans and followers that just love this University. I found it to be truly representative of an extended family. Then to work in and for this most amazing Museum, to see and bring the collection to the community, and art appreciation and education to the people - is a true joy! It is both inspiring and rewarding.

How did you get into museum work?:
I graduated with a BFA in Fine Art from West Virginia University. The closest I could get to working in the field for many years was as a framer - for a photography studio, a craft store, and an art gallery. We moved around frequently in the early years of our marriage so I did what I could find. After being a stay-at-home parent for 3 kids and with many community volunteer experiences, I joined the workforce as a teaching assistant. I arrived at Notre Dame in 2008 and started a new life in office work and fundraising, first in athletics then at the Museum. I finally arrived back in the art field and I couldn’t be happier!

Favorite work in the Snite Museum of Art?:
It is so hard to pick one... I have always been a big fan of Impressionism (Edgar Degas especially), then was taught in a more Abstract Expressionist method (love Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstract art) and then admire all photography to capture a moment in time and the Museum's collection is phenomenal – from Alfred Stieglitz to Paulette Tavormina and Alan MacWeeney. When I say now one of my favorite pieces would be the Venetian Women from the Early Renaissance period, you can understand how varied my interests are!
