Jennifer Trausch (American, b. 1977), Rev. Theodore M.Hesburgh, C.S.C., 2013, Polaroid. Acquired with funds provided by the Humana Foundation Endowment for American Art, 2013.005.003.
During the June 4-7 ND Alumni Weekend one of the last portraits taken of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., will be on view in the Snite Museum of Art.
We celebrate his life and support of the arts during his tenure as University President. Fr.Hesburgh worked with benefactor I. A. O'Shaughnessy to include art galleries within O'Shaughnessy Hall, he created a studio for Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, and he asked Frederick B. Snite to fund the Snite Museum of Art. That is, Fr. Hesburgh understood the fundamental mission of a university art museum, once stating, "you cannot have a first-class university without a first-class university art museum."
This portrait of Fr. Hesburgh was commissioned by the Snite Museum and created by photographer Jennifer Trausch during a residency workshop in early 2013.
