Instructions
for students
- Essays
may be descriptive, analytical, narrative or imaginative.

Subject
matter
- Writers
should show in their essays that they have looked carefully
at and thought carefully about their chosen subjects (background
research on objects or readings is not necessary).

Writers may

make comparisons between ideas found in class readings
and in those found in at least one work of art in the
Snite Museum
- make
comparisons between one work of art in the Snite Museum
and one found elsewhere on campus
- show
appreciations of one or two works of art in the Snite
Museum and another work of art of the student's choice
located elsewhere.
Format
- Three
pages in length.
- When
needed, all footnotes, titles, foreign names, and bibliographies
should be properly arranged and spelled.
- Names
of writer and instructor should be clearly shown on the
first page.
- Writers
should indicate in their title if the essay has been written
as a class assignment.
- Writers
and instructors should ensure that essays are properly presented
and proof-read.
Submission of essays to the competition
- Instructors
and students should ensure that essays are properly presented
and proofed.

Students may submit completed essays of no more than three
pages to Diana C.J. Matthias, Snite Museum of Art, Notre
Dame, by Friday, December 2, 2011

Prizes will be awarded at the First Year of Studies Convocation,
an event which is held annually in February, and is arranged
by the Dean of First Year of Studies.
